Kimono Modelling

Updated: 2 days ago

Kimono modelling technique using towels to create a straight silhouette for traditional Japanese kimono dressing

A typical Western dress is designed to emphasize a woman’s curvaceous beauty, highlighting the lines of the bust and waist. In contrast, the kimono intentionally minimizes natural body curves. Its concept is the exact opposite of modern dressmaking: shaping the body into a straight, balanced silhouette. The bust is gently suppressed, the waist is filled to eliminate empty space, and the body is adjusted using towels and other materials according to each individual’s shape.

Through these adjustments, the kimono enhances the beauty of women of all body types in a harmonious way. These corrections are an essential step in kimono dressing, and this modelling technique forms the fundamental foundation of proper and beautiful kimono dressing. While the method varies depending on the wearer’s body shape and the kimono stylist, we continue to refine our technique every day in pursuit of the ideal silhouette.
